Graduation Ceremony

Location

The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts is in UBC, near the Museum of Anthropology.

Shoes

    • To cross the stage, you will need to walk up and down about 5 steps, without a handrail to help you.
    • After the ceremony, you may be standing around for quite a while taking pictures and such at UBC
    • After pictures, you may be going out dancing and running around for the rest of the night
    • New dress shoes often need to be broken in by walking around in them for a few hours – you do not want to be getting blisters during graduation
    • Consider bringing comfy shoes to switch into later in the evening

Clothes

    • All fashion advice is suggestions, not rules!
    • Try on your clothes ahead of time – you do not want to find out your pants don’t fit properly an hour before the ceremony
    • Make sure you can move around comfortably

Suits and Ties

      • A black suit can be worn for almost any formal occasion – weddings, funerals, business events, job interviews
      • The belt is usually chosen to match the shoes
      • The dress shirt and tie can be chosen to match the clothes of your date/partner
        • A couple of suits with a lot of dress shirts and ties can create a wide variety of very different looks
      • Undo the buttons on your jacket when sitting down – this prevents the jacket from bunching up
      • Wool suits can get very hot in the summer – an undershirt can soak up sweat and prevent the appearance of underarm sweat stains

Dresses and Skirts

      • If you have a long dress/skirt, make sure that you are able to walk up and down stairs without stepping on it
      • You may be staying out late – you may want to bring a jacket for later in the evening

Makeup

    • If you know you will be crying, do not put mascara on your bottom lashes
    • The bathrooms at the Chan Centre are small and not great for applying makeup
