Central Tendency (Averages)

Outliers

The drink company Snapple included “facts” printed on the bottom of their lids, some of which were not true. One of these untrue statements was that “The average human eats 9 spiders in his/her lifetime while sleeping”.

A user on Tumblr claimed that this was due to “Spiders Georg”.

“average person eats 3 spiders a year” factoid actualy (sic) just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted”

Outliers such as Spiders Georg are an important concept in statistics, and have to be carefully accounted for. In this case, using the median instead of the mean would be appropriate.
