Various types of deadfall traps have been used throughout the world for thousands of years. In this project, we will concentrate on the figure 4 deadfall trap. It was documented in the 1907 book Deadfalls and Snares.

The Paiute, a Native nation from what is now the Western United States, invented a deadfall trap that uses rope as well as branches.

These techniques could be scaled up to allow the hunting of bears. In Yukon Territory, there is a cultural centre called Kwaday Dan Kenji (“Long Ago People’s Place”) that demonstrates the Tlingit deadfall trap.
