Since Sliced Bread – Windmill Sail Lesson (2:09)

In track and field, sprinting events like the 100m dash and the long jump can be helped or hindered by the wind. If the wind assistance (tailwind) is above 2.0 m/s, any results are not eligible for records.

The track and field sport of discus throwing does not take into account wind assistance. In Ramona, Oklahoma, there is a discus field that is very windy, and many very far throws have been recorded there. As of March, 2026, the 5 farthest men’s discus throws have all been recorded in Ramona.

World Athletics, the governing body for international track and field competitions, says that the records will stand and that wind is a factor in events such as the discus throw.

It would be impossible to choose a point at which to measure the wind given the width of the throwing area and the vast area [width and height] that throwing implements cover.

Understanding the wind conditions has always been part of throwing and vertical jump athletes’ calculations.

It should also be noted that wind assistance is far more beneficial for an object that has a large surface, such as a human body, rather than a small and light implement that can be easily diverted.

It is more difficult to quantify the benefit of wind in the same way as in running.

It will be difficult to change the rules now.
