How do You Weigh a Ship? (5:01)

This description of how to calculate the buoyancy is very simplified. Modern ships are complex 3D shapes, and it is therefore very complex to calculate the volume.

In a boat, weight is often added to the keel (the bottom) to decrease the buoyancy, and increase the stability of the boat. If the weight is added to the wrong place, the boat will be unstable.

The Tally Ho, a wooden sailing yacht, has an 8 ton (16,000 pound) lead keel to help with stability.

In addition to the lead keel, there is also a lot of lead ballast (about 1.5 tons, or 3000 pounds) mounted inside the boat’s bilge (the lowest point in a boat).

As Leo Sampson says in the video, making mistakes with the ballast calculations is embarrassing, but is a fixable problem.
