Learning Intentions
- To learn how the elements are arranged into the Periodic Table of Elements
- To learn some of the elementary particles that constitute all matter
- To learn vocabulary related to atomic theory
Notes
TED-Ed – The 2,400-year search for the atom – Theresa Doud (5:22)
The model of protons, neutrons, and electrons that you have probably learned is not fully accurate.
The “Standard Model” is one of the best theories physicists have proposed to describe what makes up matter. Note that the Standard Model is much more detailed and complex than what we will be discussing in this class.

Voyage into the world of atoms (2:01)
Media
Tom Lehrer – The Element Song (1:27)
AsapSCIENCE – The Periodic Table Song (2018 Update!) (3:04)
The following video is a computer generated animation zooming deep into matter. Note that it goes into far more detail than we will be examining.
The Super Zoom (3:19)
The (Truly) Periodic Table (7:04)
Alkali Metals in Water (2:22)
Why do you think there is not any video footage of francium reacting with water?
