Thursday, April 16 – Tip/Slip with Excel and Deadfall Trap Project

Current unit: Dynamics (Forces) in 2D

  • Physics 12 Attendance
    • Sit where you want
    • If you are not here when the bell goes, you are late (exception: doing announcements)
    • Write your name on the sheet when leaving the class
    • No leaving the class with your friend(s)
  • Review homework: Worksheet – Modelling Friction in 2D
  • Whiteboards – solve tip for drum problem
  • Using Excel
    • Get computer from room 370
    • Graph force needed to tip and slip from theta is 0 to 360
      • Advanced: use deltaTheta variable
  • Deadfall Trap Project
    • Make sure you have submitted your hypothesis and procedures
      • Include reasoning (physics) behind your hypothesis
      • Not many groups found the centres of mass of the objects
      • Your analysis of the data must include static equilibrium
      • Averaging: ideally 10+ trials, acceptably 5+ trials, talk with Mr. Renwick if you can only do 1-4 trials
    • Assessing the lab – will post Deadfall Trap Project Part 2 tomorrow
      • Planning and conducting: collecting data
      • Processing and analyzing data and information: must include free body diagrams with static equilibrium calculations
      • Evaluating: sources of error
      • Questioning and predicting: generating 2 new hypotheses based on your results
      • Applying and innovating: finding real-world applications for your results and/or new hypotheses
    • After talking with Mr. Renwick, start to prepare to run the experiment
    • Work days today, tomorrow, and next 2 weeks
    • Due date: Friday, May 1
  •  Wrap-up
    • Period 3: put up chairs
