Servings: 8
Ingredients
- 600 g Italian sausage casing removed
- 300 g ground beef
- 115 g onion 3/4 cup, diced
- 4 cloves garlic crushed
- 796 mL crushed tomatoes canned
- 369 mL tomato paste canned
- 369 mL tomato sauce canned
- 125 g water 1/2 cup
- 1 tbsp white sugar 12 g
- 1.5 tsp dried basil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp crushed red pepper
- 1/2 tsp fennel seed
- 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
Optional
- 500 g brown mushrooms 5 cups
- 300 g spinach frozen, chopped
Instructions
- In a large pot, cook sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until the meat is browned and the onion is translucent.
- Add all the tomatoes, water, sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Simmer, covered, for 1 hour. Stir occasionally.
- Thaw the spinach and drain well. Squeeze it using your hands to remove excess water.
- In some oil, cook the mushrooms in a pot until tender. Drain the liquid, and set the mushrooms aside with the spinach.
- After cooking for 1 hour, remove the lid and stir the spinach and mushrooms into the sauce. Continue to simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes.
- Stop simmering once the sauce is the desired thickness.
Notes
If doubling the recipe, use 190 g (3/4 cup) of water.
