Pasta Sauce

Ingredients

  • 600 g Italian sausage
  • 300 g ground beef
  • 3/4 cup diced onion 115 g
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 796 mL crushed tomatoes canned
  • 369 mL tomato paste canned
  • 369 mL tomato sauce canned
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp white sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1.5 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seed
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper

Optional

  • 5 cups brown mushrooms 500 g
  • 300 g spinach

Instructions

  • In a large pot, cook sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until the meat is browned and the onion is translucent.
  • Add all the tomatoes, water, sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Simmer, covered, for 1 hour. Stir occasionally.
  • Steam the spinach for about 2 minutes. Set aside.
  • In some oil, cook the mushrooms in a pot until tender. Drain the liquid, and set the mushrooms aside with the spinach.
  • After cooking for 1 hour, remove the lid and continue to simmer for about 30 minutes. Stop simmering once the sauce is the desired thickness.
  • Stir the spinach and mushrooms into the sauce.
