Pasta Sauce

Ingredients

  • 500 g Italian sausage
  • 300 g ground beef
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes canned
  • 12 oz tomato paste canned
  • 13 oz tomato sauce canned
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp white sugar
  • 1.5 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seed
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper

Optional

  • 2 cups brown mushrooms sliced
  • 1 bag spinach

Instructions

  • Cook the sausage, ground beef, onion, mushrooms, and garlic until the meat is well-browned.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients except the spinach, and cook, covered, on low heat for 1.5 hours.
  • Steam the spinach for about 2 minutes. Set aside.
  • With 10 minutes left in the cooking time, stir the spinach into the sauce.
