Cuisine: Italian
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 600 g Italian sausage casing removed
  • 300 g ground beef
  • 115 g onion 3/4 cup, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic crushed
  • 796 mL crushed tomatoes canned
  • 369 mL tomato paste canned
  • 369 mL tomato sauce canned
  • 125 g water 1/2 cup
  • 1 tbsp white sugar 12 g
  • 1.5 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seed
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper

Optional

  • 500 g brown mushrooms 5 cups
  • 300 g spinach frozen, chopped

Instructions

  • In a large pot, cook sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until the meat is browned and the onion is translucent.
  • Add all the tomatoes, water, sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Simmer, covered, for 1 hour. Stir occasionally.
  • Thaw the spinach and drain well. Squeeze it using your hands to remove excess water.
  • In some oil, cook the mushrooms in a pot until tender. Drain the liquid, and set the mushrooms aside with the spinach.
  • After cooking for 1 hour, remove the lid and stir the spinach and mushrooms into the sauce. Continue to simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes.
  • Stop simmering once the sauce is the desired thickness.
